A recent report from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. noted that many consumers in the country may not know how to handle their money.
According to the FDIC, American's ignorance exists on both a personal and general level. For example, many may not know how to save money or manage their finances, which leads them to being uniformed when it comes to the financial difficulties the country has faces.
"The need for consumer education has grown with the spread of complex financial products, yet until recent years not enough has been done to help consumers, especially young people, make informed decisions about their money," the report from the FDIC said.
Along with having a lack of how the financial world works overall, not knowing how to handle their money makes it hard for consumers to build up their standing, the FDIC said.
However, there are options for consumers who need some help examining their financial situations. For example, some may consider a consumer credit counseling service, which can help consumers examine their budgets while also showing them how to pay off debt.
