Young people may not have the proper education when it comes to the proper use of debt, although some are making attempts to provide information.
For example, John Hargrove, a former bankruptcy judge, partnered with a consumer credit counseling company during a meeting with more than 800 high school students in Southern California. The meeting was part of the Credit Abuse Resistance Education program, which works to teach younger generations about finances.
"The temptation is growing for young adults to use credit cards as a means to buy whatever they want, whenever they want it," Hargrove said, adding that doing so can damage their chance at getting a loan or job in the future.
Young people who are looking for additional help with managing their finances and avoiding debt may consider a consumer credit counseling service. These organizations can aid young people by setting up a budget that takes into account their actual income.
They can also provide solutions for what young people owe on their credit cards, including debt consolidation, which can lead to them paying less interest over time.
