Some consumers may find they need additional counseling when it comes to paying taxes, and the Internal Revenue Service is planning to offer it in May.
The IRS will hold open houses across the country on May 15 to help individuals and small businesses answer their tax-related questions. Agency offices will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and each state will have at least one location to serve the public.
"Our goal is to resolve issues on the spot so small businesses and individuals can put any issues they have with the IRS behind them," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said.
People who find they are having problems paying their taxes can get information about installment agreements with the IRS, along with be provided assistance regarding offers-in-compromise. At a recent open house event held in March, 88 percent of consumers who showed up to get help had their problems handled that day.
While the tax open house may help with IRS issues, other financial burdens may have people needing additional assistance. One option they may consider is consumer credit counseling, which can help analyze incomes and establish a budget.
