People who are having tax trouble may consider getting some help directly from the Internal Revenue Service.
On Saturday, March 27, the IRS is hosting more than 180 open houses, which will provide citizens with the ability to get their tax questions answered. The open houses will occur from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time.
"We are holding these special open houses to give taxpayers who are struggling in these difficult economic times more opportunity to work directly with IRS employees to resolve their tax issues," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
Consumers may be entitled to a number of tax breaks this year, which could make it easier for them to pay off debt. For example, those who purchased a new home could get up to an $8,000 break on their taxes.
The government also expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit to include people who have more than three children. Those people can get up to $5,657.
By getting the most out of their taxes, consumers may be able to get a better return check. And when it comes to figuring out how to use the money, a consumer credit counseling agency may be able to provide its own advice on budgeting and credit card debt.
