Cutting back on expenses is one of the most basic things people can do to pay off debt, and a recent survey shows some consumers are brown bagging it to do so.
The poll from CareerBuilder.com revealed that 47 percent of respondents have been taking their lunch to work while dealing with a more difficult economic situation. While saving money is a goal for some, however, trying to live a healthier lifestyle is also playing into the decision.
"Economic stress over the last year has caused some workers to reflect on their habits, and many of them have turned to healthier routines," CareerBuilder's vice president of human resources Rosemary Haefner said.
While what they eat is playing a factor in trying to save, other changes in habit are also being considered. For example, 20 percent of workers who smoke said they've quit in order to save money, while 21 percent said they are puffing away less.
As these new habits may help, people may also consider visiting a consumer credit counseling service. These firms can provide other pieces of advice on how to trim a budget based on a person's monthly income.
