A recent survey from American Express shows that many parents want to teach their children about money this year.
According to the poll, 91 percent of responding parents said they plan on giving their children a financial education this year. That would include teaching them what it takes to earn money and how it is used in day-to-day life.
Other lessons include the responsible use of debt and teaching kids about money through a system of rewards, such as an allowance.
The poll was the result of a sample of 506 American households that have children between the ages of 6 and 16. Of those households, 71 percent of parents said their children were aware that the nation is dealing with a recession.
Though the adults may want to teach children about finances, doing so could be difficult for those who can't get a grip on handling their own funds. Some people who have had money problems have found some help through consumer credit counseling services.
Through such services, people can find advice on things like managing debt and how to construct a budget based on the income they bring home.
