One way to help when trying to pay off debt is to cut expenses, and how one shops for groceries may present an opportunity to save money.
A recent story from the Associated Press tapped a consumer credit counseling service for advice on how consumers can reduce their grocery bills. Though the savings may seem small, when taken over a period of time they can amount to a decent chunk of change.
In order to save money, consumers should consider eating food at home before shopping for it at the store.
"Shopping on an empty stomach will always cost you more at the store," the report said.
While walking down the grocery aisles, consumers should make sure to look high and low for products, as stores will often put less expensive items on those shelf areas.
Buying in bulk may also be an option, though it could end up costing consumers if they don't use all the products they buy. The report suggested that people may consider splitting bulk purchases with someone else in order to make them more cost-effective.
Along with groceries, there are other areas where consumers may be able to cut back on spending. For example, eating out less can lead to savings, while reducing a home entertainment package can help consumers find extra cash to pay off debt.
