A recent survey shows some coupled avoid talking about their current and future financial situations before getting married.
The poll, which was commissioned by zendough.com and taken by Zogby, showed 19.4 percent of respondents said they had not thought about bringing up finances prior to marriage or avoided the conversation even after the subject crossed their mind.
About one-fourth of those polled did say they talked about finances and went as far as to set up a budget for the future.
"Discussing finances with your significant other can be scary and awkward, but being open and honest about your individual financial situation can help you avoid issues or stress down the road," said zendough education director Heather Schneider.
The website recommended that people planning on getting married develop a financial plan, which should reflect the goals for the long and short term.
However, some may find it difficult to integrate their finances and establish a budget, although there are services that can help. For example, couples may consider visiting a consumer credit counseling service, which provides advice on financial planning.
