Many consumers are working this year to pay off debt, which may affect how they do their holiday shopping.
In a recent column for the Detroit Free Press, writer Susan Tompor noted that some people might consider turning to a resale shop when looking for holiday gifts. Of course, there is a certain amount of risk involved when buying a used item as a gift for someone.
"If not done right, though, I'd admit this idea could be a turkey," Tompor said.
Tompor spoke with Nicole Freund, who co-owns Regeneration New & Used Clothing, which is located in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan. Freund said that it could be "weird" to give someone a used gift if the person is not a fan of shopping at thrift stores.
Another way suggested by Tompor for people looking to make money and pay off debt is to take items they no longer use to a consignment store. However, consumers should keep in mind they probably won't make a lot, even if they do sell something at the store.
Those who are facing money problems don't necessarily have to turn to selling off their items in order to make ends meet. For example, they may go to a consumer credit counseling service, which can help people through a debt management plan.
