Workers who have been struggling with credit card debt and other financial problems got still more bad news on Friday in the form of a government report indicating that the economy lost another 95,000 jobs last month.
In its report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that the nation's unemployment rate remained at 9.6 percent. Earlier in the week, some media outlets cited the possibility that the unemployment rate could actually edge a little higher with more workers potentially trying to re-join the labor force.
One thing the unemployment data does not reflect is the number of people who are working part time out of economic necessity. According to the BLS, there are now 9.5 million such workers, with the figure rising by about 943,000 in the last two months alone.
One side effect of this trend is likely to be an increased demand for debt management services and other financial strategies.
The BLS also cited 2.5 million workers considered marginally attached to the labor force, compared to 2.2 million at this time last year. People in this category have not searched for work in at least four weeks despite having previously sought a job in the past year.
