A recent report from the Better Business Bureau shows that the number of complaints registered about collection agencies went down in 2009.
According to the BBB, a total of 15,797 complaints against these agencies were received last year, which is 3.3 percent fewer than was reported in 2008. In terms of rank, collections agencies were the sixth highest product or service to have complaints registered.
Overall, consumer complaints to the BBB increased 9.7 percent in 2009.
"Amidst the housing crisis, high unemployment rate and the chaos on Wall Street, the last year has not been easy on consumers and the increase in complaints to BBB reflect this troubled economy," said Stephen Cox, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.
Though complaints about collection agencies may be down, one way consumers can avoid having to deal with them is by staying current on their debts. People who are finding it difficult to do so may consider debt consolidation, which can make bills easier to pay by reducing them to one monthly statement.
Debt consolidation can also help by reducing the interest rate consumers have on things like credit card debt.
