One difficult consequence of having too much debt and an inability to pay it off could be bankruptcy, which can tarnish a person's credit score for years.
Ironically, some people may not even be able to afford to file for bankruptcy, as it may require consumer credit counseling or paying an attorney. However, the Utah Bankruptcy Law Center is trying to help troubled consumers in that state.
The organization bases its fees on a per-client and per-circumstance basis, while people may even qualify for free help.
"The main mission of the UBLC law firm is to assist regular people and small businesses to navigate through the legal bankruptcy maze, and actually be able to afford to obtain debt relief," UBLC supervising attorney Sarah Beck said.
Bankruptcy may be seen by some as a last-ditch effort for dealing with bills that have gone out of control. Before a consumer gets to the point, they may consider an option like debt consolidation, which may lead to lower interest rates.
