Obama signs unemployment extension after Congressional stall

By Angela Hawke on Jul 23rd, 2010

Since around the beginning of June, roughly 2.5 million unemployed Americans were cut off from benefits made available by the government.

However, President Barack Obama signed a $34 billion extension to the jobless program after it was approved by the House in a 272-152 vote. The extension will allow the program to start up again and continue through November.

After signing it, Obama chided Republicans for holding up the bill and said unemployed families will finally get the assistance they need as the economy continues through its difficulties.

"Now it's time for Congress to act on more proposals that support our economic recovery, including passing critical aid to our states and support to small businesses," Obama said.

Signing of the bill came only a few hours after the House passed it. Meanwhile, the Senate approved the measure on July 21 after weeks of delays.

While the bill may help cover some expenses people have faced, others may still have had to rely on credit card debt to get by. One option they may eventually consider is debt consolidation, which can help pay those accounts by presenting reduced interest rates.ADNFCR-2800-ID-19905448-ADNFCR
