Shopping with cards is an option, though some may consider debt consolidation for financial problems

11/26/2009

Some consumers may still turn to credit card debt when holiday shopping, though there are methods for them to use to keep up with their efforts to pay off debt.

A recent story from SmartMoney.com noted that people who are trying to manage their credit card debt can still use plastic, provided they follow some guidelines. For example, consumers who are in this situation should make sure they can pay off their holiday purchases in a short period of time, thereby reducing their interest payment.

Consumers should also pick a card with the highest credit limit and the lowest annual percentage rate.

"Your goal is to add as little as possible to your debt while preserving your credit score," SmartMoney noted.

Of course, not everyone has the luxury of being able to use credit cards because of the fact they are so deep in debt. An option for those consumers is to consider a debt consolidation plan. Debt consolidation, which may be offered through a debt management plan, affords people a way to pay off their debts, often at a lower interest rate.
