Though credit counseling is required prior to debt consolidation, compulsive shoppers can take action early and benefit from nonprofit consumer credit counseling before their debt becomes unmanageable.
In a recent article for the Chicago Tribune, HealthKey.com's Peter Bernard noted that though the rich and famous may be able to afford their lavish spending habits, and other addictions, things aren't as easy for regular folks when it comes to dealing with a shopping addiction.
"Addiction experts label compulsive shopping and spending as a serious disease that can cost the afflicted their relationships, jobs, homes and other prized possessions, all the while racking up massive debts, usually on high-interest credit cards," Bernard wrote.
There are, however, signs people can look for that could indicate they have a problem with a shopping addiction. For example, spending above one's budget, or buying compulsively, can be signs that a person may be dealing with a shopping addiction.
In order to deal with the problem before taking more serious measures, such as debt consolidation, consumers are advised to seek the help of professional counselors or go to a self-help group. For example, consumer credit counseling services can help a person who is dealing with compulsive shopping by trying to set up methods to avoid additional spending.
