BBB warns people in Utah against certain debt-related calls, while other officials worry about debt settlement

By Angela Hawke on Feb 12th, 2010

Many consumers may be looking for help with their credit card debt through companies. However, they should be careful of falling for the promises of certain companies.

A recent story from Utah's Desert News newspaper noted that the Better Business Bureau is warning people in the state to be careful when getting phone calls from companies that claim they can negotiate for a lower interest rate on their credit card debt.

"Most of the time now, you can't even do that yourself," said Jane Driggs, president with the organization. But most companies are more willing to work with consumers than with another company."

Along with not providing the services they've promised, another reason people should be wary of these calls is because they could be from people trying to get their personal information. Some could use that to steal a consumer's identity and open an account in their name.

Before using a company, the BBB noted that a consumer should check to see if they are listed on the organization's website and should validate the company's information.

Given these trying times, many people may be looking for help with credit card debt, which could lead to some companies trying to take advantage of them. As a result, a number of state officials have warned against offers made by debt settlement companies, which may not deliver on their promises of debt relief.
