School supplies are one cost that could cause people to have to pull out their credit cards, but people in Illinois may get a break in August.
Governor Pat Quinn recently signed a bill that would create a sales tax holiday from August 6 to 15. During that time, certain items will not be subject to the state's 5 percent portion of a transaction.
"Back-to-school shopping can be expensive and difficult for families that are already struggling to make ends meet," Quinn said.
The state noted that parents in Illinois spend anywhere from $800 million to $1.2 billion on school supplies annually. The holiday would apply to items such as paper, binders, pens, pencils and other typical supplies. Furthermore, clothing with a price tag of less than $100 would also be subject to the break.
A recent national survey from PriceGrabber.com showed that 49 percent of those polled said they would spread out their back-to-school shopping over a number of months in an effort to make it easier on their pocket book.
As a result, some of these people may find they don't have to rely on credit card debt as much.
