Using debit, credit card debt safely

By Sam Craine on Jun 13th, 2010

During the recession, some people may have learned to turn away from using credit card debt and focus on budgeting by only using money they actually have.

Hence, a number of people are making more purchases with their debit cards. However, this form of plastic may present its own problems for consumers if they are not careful, according to financial firm PULSE. Jim Cichy, vice president of fraud management for the company, said that with increased use of debit cards comes the chance that thieves will try to commit fraud.

"To keep money safe and secure, consumers need to better understand how to work with their financial institution to combat security compromises and fraudulent use of financial information," Cichy said.

Card holders are advised to keep their personal identifications numbers secret. They should also be wary of any unsolicited emails requesting information about their account, which is a ploy often used by fraudsters.

Even credit card debt accounts can present an opportunity for fraud, and experts advise consumers to keep a close eye on their statement for any suspicious activity.ADNFCR-2800-ID-19833625-ADNFCR
